It's 2016, now what? Yes, now what? Why does a new year make me and everyone else so excited? My personal opinion on the matter, is the promise of hope and the potential for something or anything better or greater than what we had in the previous year. So why now? What makes the clock striking at midnight change our outlook on life one second before the stroke of midnight? The answer I think is goals, we all set them every new year, but the problem is the goals we set are either so big, or we have no tangible action plan to accomplish said goals.
Goals are very important to me, especially when I accomplish said goals. My sense of accomplishment is even more gratifying when I'm able to gauge progress and growth, good or bad. As I start this new year I reflect. I reflect on the goals I have set for myself and identify the ones I was able to check off my list. Some of my goals that I was unable to check off was because they were shooting to the stars goals and here's what I mean. Shooting to the stars goals to me is something I state at the beginning of the year, for example I want to make a million dollars this year (who doesn't right), just toss it out there and expect it to happen without actually having a tangible plan to make it happen.
The new year gives me energy and hope for amazing opportunities to come. But there's a problem, waiting for a new year to reflect on my accomplishments, hoping for a better situation and waiting for that energy boost, in opinion takes way too long. Tomorrow is a new day, new energy, new hope, so my focused should be on tomorrow not a new year.
So the question is, what do I want for tomorrow and what tangible steps am I taking today to make that happen? So here's my new year policy. If I want to get better then I need to set tangible goals everyday and not every new year. That said, here are my big professional goals for tomorrow:
- I want to be a better photographer tomorrow. What am I doing about it today? Researching, practicing and investing in education, in an effort to augment my skill-set.
- I want to be a better business person tomorrow. What am I doing about today? Getting help from peers, meeting new people, seeking guidance, reading, educating myself and taking risks.
- I want to be a better educator tomorrow. What am I doing about today? Doing public speaking because it terrifies me, offering as much help on our YouTube and Facebook group platform, and doing workshops to get instant feedback on what works or does not work.
These are my wants and tangible goals that I will be setting for myself everyday in this new year so I can have a better tomorrow. Here's to a new day.
