Katherin Prada From Colombia | Durham North Carolina Photographer
Katherin Prada, who is from Colombia but now resides in NC, reached out to me for a photo session and as they say, the rest is history. I will provide a quick recap below that will provide some insight into my thought process for this session.
Before any photo session, my goal is to put together a vision board. It's not literally a board, but it's a group of images to show the team, but in this case, it's just Katherin. The purpose of the vision board is to express visually what I can't with words the look I am after with respect to hair, wardrobe, makeup and the overall emotional feeling of the final image. For me this type of communication is clear and it leaves very little room for miscommunication.
In addition to the vision board, if the subject is supplying their own wardrobe as with Katherin, I asked her to send me an image with her wearing the wardrobe as oppose to just an image of the wardrobe only. I find that a visual representation of how the clothing falls on the subject allows me fully understand if the wardrobe would work for the ultimate look and if it doesn't we can make adjustments before we even start the session. When I received Katherin images we did make a few adjustments but nothing too dramatic.
When Katherin arrived at the session, I knew what to expect and she knew what she had to do because we were in constant communication before the session. The only thing that I didn't tell her, but she had it, was to bring flip-flops to save her feet with the heels as we walked around.
My initial plan was to use artificial lights and big beautiful modifiers but I was unable to secure an assistant at the last minute, so I changed my plans. So instead of artificial light, I went with all natural light. The goal to using natural light is to pay attention to how the light falls on your subject. The light quality can be hard, soft, directional etc. it's just a matter of positioning your subject properly and posing them so the light is flattering on them and not a distraction.
My vision for this shoot was to communicate classic, simple, timeless and beautiful images so every pose and lighting had to check those boxes.
I really enjoy the results from this session and Katherin Prada did a wonderful job, she was extremely patient with me during the shoot and after.
